it's a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, therefore: reuptake is inhibited... so it INCREASES the bio-availabilitiy of serotonin

dopamine is BLOCKED from the receptors.. the body then increases the number of receptors, which is what causes tardive dyskinesia

it fully occupies the site, so if you took the drug it won't make a difference (eg this is how methodone works, heroin can't have effect b/c methodone is occupying site)
what is a drug interaction
when taking multiple drugs, liver can break it down into 2 active compounds, when many drugs, have multiple compounds and many new/possible toxic molecules
define biotransformation
this is what happens in the liver, and then its eliminated, either thru exhalation, urine, feces, sweat
anything that interferes with absoption in the bloodstream interferes with what of a drug?

what is the major contributing factor to bioavailability?
the efficiency of the liver, more efficient =processed faster; elderly = slow (give less often);
children/babies = very fast (so lower doses and more OFTEN)
what are the issues with Rx and the elderly
less body mass, less fat, less muscle

most meds are lipid soluble (stored in fat); each drug distributes some store to fatty tissues, only what is not stored is used, so in elderly, less is stored (so it's hanging around, I THINK)

the body is always trying to compensate, so they transform the drugs FASTER, more efficiently, so you need MORE of the drug to get the same effect (liver is like pacman and will multiple the pacmans to keep up)
alcohol depresses cellular function, so what happens when not drinking
b.c alcohol slows it down, when not drinking, cells will try to speed up extra b/c they COMPENSATE, so the cell is HYPERFUNCTIONING = withdrawal... get a fine hand tremor b/c cells are over functioning, any CNS depressant (tranquilizer) will stop it

define rebound effects
rebound is when you stop taking it, e.g sleeping pill, you can't sleep at all

when you take one drug, it enhances action of another (eg if give a thyroid pill with antidepressant, it will increase the bioavailability to the other)
