The company began to create an image for itself as the champion of free speech and tolerance. Contracting more and more authors to write about social issues, the company publicly supported gay rights, AIDS research, and the plight of battered women. With its growing overseas presence, Playboy magazine became a forum for dissidents from developing countries to write about abuses of power and government corruption.
The 90s were characterized by the rise of the internet which completely changed the competitive dynamics in the media industry. It brought revolutionary changes in the way media are consumed. This was disastrous for Playboy as the web grants the possibility to obtain pornographic material very easily and for free.

Nowadays the Playboy Corporation breaks down its business into three main categories: Publishing, which manages the magazine, Entertainment, which controls the company’s presence in electronic media, and Licensing, which licenses the Playboy brand name and logo to third parties.
The core and historical business is the Publishing segment that publishes Playboy magazine, a general-interest magazine targeted to men. The main activities of this division are special editions, books, calendars and the licensing of international editions of Playboy magazine.
