Abortion is a topic that is highly controversial. Whether abortion should be legal or not is an on going debate, diving the nation in half. In 1973, the Supreme Court Decision of the case Roe vs Wade legalized abortion in the US. Since then, there have been about 57,390,897 abortions in the US and 1,356,143,570 worldwide (Guttmacher Institute). As the never ending debate continues, I believe every women has the right to control over her body and no law should be able to take that away from her. There are several types of abortions that one can have. As there are 3 trimesters in pregnancies, each trimester has a different procedure. During the first trimester, one can have a surgical or medical abortion. The two medical abortions are Methotrexate & Misoprostol (MTX) which is used up to the first seven weeks and the abortion pill which is used up to the first seven to nine weeks. The two surgical abortions are Manual Vacuum Aspiration (MVA) and Aspiration. MVA can be performed during weeks 3-12. Aspiration can be performed up to the first 16 weeks. First trimester abortions are the most common as it is very early into the pregnancy. 9 out of 10 abortions are during this period. During the second trimester, medication is no longer an option and only surgical abortion can be done. At this point in the pregnancy, the fetus is well developed.
