From being cat-called on the streets to being raped the fear of sexual assault is never ending for women. For boys egithteenght birthdays they go celebrate the night on the town. For girls they are given pepper spray for their protection, it’s even painted pink just for her. Walking home alone at night for women is a different story. They were taught to hold their keys between their knuckles, walk fast, and have situation awareness all at the same time. How vitally important it is for women to watch their drinks in the bar and to always travel in groups. To yell fire not rape because people will respond to that better. We teach women ways to not get raped, but when do we teach society not to rape. “1 out of every 6 American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime (14.8% completed rape; 2.8% attempted rape).” (Tjaden,Thoennes page 3) It is ridiculous how big these numbers are, we as a society need to put a stop to sexual violence.
We need to start young and to make sure that children know what is right and wrong. They should learn about consent. Consent isn’t always about sex it’s defined as, “Permission for something to happen or agreement to do something.” Children may not see it as important but once it’s built in their brain that you can’t touch someone or take their toy without permission then they will start asking before they act.
