Drill Sergeant First Class Greene taught me what an Army Non-Commissioned Officer leader should be from my first days in the Army. From the day I met him, SFC Greene personified the Army values: loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage. He taught how to be a Soldier by leading by personal example. He mentored me in lessons about honor and integrity. SFC Greene’s mentoring carries with me through my career. As I learn to be a more effective leader capable of inspiring my Soldiers, I reflect on SFC Greene and his example. His example showed me what right is and is an example I continue to follow.
Effective leaders lead by example. SFC Greene led by example. One of his examples I wanted to emulate was his perfect physical fitness score. If Soldiers in our basic training platoon aspired for an Army Physical Fitness Test score of 300, SFC Greene mentored them in how to achieve that perfect score. He explained his training regimen and his commitment to train during off duty hours. SFC Greene also finished his Bachelor’s Degree while serving as a Drill Sergeant by going to school at night. As a new Soldier in my initial phase of training, seeing this level of commitment from a senior NCO to being a better Soldier inspired me. I realized that being the best Soldier I could be required work outside of the duty day and a strong commitment.
Also important to Soldiers in basic training is learning to pay attention to detail. SFC Greene…
