High School Dropouts and the Social Structure

Thesis Statement:

" I believe that dropping out of school is the direct result of strain caused

by the economic/political institutions that are within the social structure".

Introduction: The Social Structure is the housing for the social institutions: Politics, Economics, Mass Media, Groups/Organizations, Family, Education and Religion. What I plan to discuss in this research project is how economic and political institutions contribute to the cause of dropping out of school. What is a Dropout? The teachers unfortunately get into a mindset where the job of teaching becomes just a paycheck. I have witnessed teachers tell students they are unconcerned if the student learns or doesn't because they are being paid regardless. It is attitudes like these that cause students to not care after all the teachers are the motivating factors in the quest for knowledge that these students embark on when they go to school. The schools in these areas, due to misappropriation of funds often do not have the latest tools such as up to date computers or software, modern maps or any video equipment (Gumper,David 1996). In today's society these are the driving forces in every day lives, and the urban student has one strike against them because of this.

The Economic institution puts a strain on the students and it causes them to divert and do things that perhaps will put them in a position where they will be at a risk of dropping out of school. These students often seek jobs in hopes of trying to come out of poverty, unknowingly as a consequence they will have to drop out of school
In essence it is truly a circle when it comes to students and the dropping out of school, as it relates to the economic institution. The mechanics of the problem are simple: the student is born into a poor environment, they stop going to school so that they can work to help with the parents' struggle in keeping the house financially functioning.
