Four functions of management- planning, organizing, leading and controlling, are very helpful for management in devising strategies so that organizational goals and objectives can be achieved. Almost all successful organizations practice these four functions of management. If these functions are executed properly, it improves competitiveness and productivity of the organization. A leader knows what kind of leadership style is effective under which circumstances. A good and experienced leader helps the followers to attain common goals (McKenna, 2000). Managers at Verizon Wireless show very good examples of leadership. They have developed beautiful system which motivates employees to contribute more towards the goals and objectives of the organization. At Verizon, they respect and trust one another, communicate openly, candidly and directly. Idea sharing is promoted which generates the sense of ownership among employees. They keep bureaucracy out. (Verizon Wireless Corporate Website). At Verizon Wireless, leaders practice participative style of leadership. It is the result of effective leadership at Verizon Wireless that employees see crisis and change as opportunities, not threats. Controlling: In the controlling phase, effective policies are implemented to regulate employees and make them disciplined so that they can concentrate on contributing towards goals and objectives of the organization. This phase includes setting standard, setting goals for employees, monitoring performance of employees, assessing employees performance and taking remedial action to improve the performance of employees. In this phase, feedback is collected from employees which helps in developing more effective strategies’ in the next planning phase. Verizon Wireless has implemented very effective controlling phase.
