The Career Thoughts Inventory is a theory based tool utilized to examine negative career thoughts held by individuals seeking career options. The developers, James P, Sampson, Jr., PhD, Gary W. Peterson, PhD, Janet G. Lenz, PhD, Robert C. Reardon, PhD, and Denise E. Saunders, MS created the Career Thoughts Inventory to assist individuals acquire information specific to their ideas about career choices. This tool will assist career counselors in working with clients to exchange their negative career thoughts with positive and progressive thoughts. The Likert formatted inventory measures three domains: Decision making confusion, commitment anxiety, and external conflict. High scores in the various domains reflect anxiety related to decision making, lack of commitment, and conflicting issues within social networks. Sampson, Peterson, Lenz, Reardon, & Saunders (1996), state the ultimate goals of the instrument is to identify, challenge, alter, and act upon negative career thoughts (pg. 1). While completing the Career Thoughts Inventory, a vast range of emotions surfaced during and after the inventory. While taking the inventory, a strong direction of answers identified as “Strongly disagree.” I was unaware how this pattern would effect the outcome. Initially, this trend brought feelings of perplexity. Next, past feelings of inadequacy, failure, and sadness were eminent.
